So you want to become a Driving Instructor !

If you’re thinking about becoming a driving instructor then here a few of the things you need to consider before spending any money and taking the plunge.

You need to have the right character to become an A.D.I and to posses a few of the following qualities.

  • Patience – some pupils need you to keep going over the same thing over and over again until they get it!
  • Good communication skills – explain in simple terms what’s required
  • Understanding – the needs of your pupil and how they’re feeling
  • Creativity – do somersaults and kart wheels to get your point across
  • Have a sense of humour – you’ll need it at times!

The requirements are:

You must have held a full manual ( category B ) licence for at least four out of the last six years. You must also have not been disqualified during this time.
You must be described as a fit and proper person, meaning no convictions under the rehabilitation of offenders act.
And cannot at any time have more than six points on your licence for motoring offences.

If you meet the above you should be okay.

Funding your road to becoming an Instructor is easier than you might think! Career Development loans are availible from most High Street Banks. These loans allow you to pay for your training and then when you become qualified as an Instructor you begin to pay the loan back to your bank. The Tests are:

You will have to pass three separate tests called Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3,so you will need a lot of patience to study with understanding family and friends.
When you have passed the first two parts you may be able to take out a Trainee instructor licence which will allow you to begin obtaining experience of teaching pupils to drive. This training will assist in the passing of the part 3 test.

A.D.I. Part 1

Theory Test is 100 multiple choice questions with 4 possible answers, only 1 answer will be correct.
The questions are in 4 categories with an allocation time of 90 minutes for the test.
Categories are:
Traffic signs and signals, pedestrians, car control and mechanical.
Road procedure and knowledge off.
The driving test, disabled people with disabilities and driving law.
Publications and recommended instructional techniques.

The overall pass mark for the test is 85% but you must obtain a minimum pass mark of 80% in each of the 4 categories ie. 20% in each. Get 25% + 25%+ 25% +19% = 94% but as 19% was achieved in 1 of the categories this would be a fail!

Hazard Perception Test is 14 video clips of approx 1 minute duration containing 15 developing hazards. One of the 14 clips contains 2 hazards the rest 1 each. For each of the hazards you can score between 0 and 5 points if you react quickly you can score 5 points but react slowly and you could score less running down to zero points if you register late. The pass mark for this will be 57 points out of a total of 75 points.

A.D.I. Part 2

This is a 1 hour driving test for which the pass mark is no more than six minor faults.
Breaking this down means no more than 1 minor fault every 10 minutes!
All the manouvres including a right hand reverse have to be completed, so your driving skills have to be well above average.

A.D.I. Part 3

This is the final test, which is your test of instructional ability, in other words your ability to teach someone to drive. Correcting and diagnosing faults as well as teaching the subjects and skills required in order to, pass the test.
This test in is two parts usually involving role play by a supervising examiner who will act out a scenario as a fairly basic learner pupil followed by a more experienced pupil perhaps close to their test.
Again this will last for about an hour.
